Cub Swanson handed jiu-jitsu ace Kron Gracie his first loss in MMA, landing an incredible amount of strikes on the ultra-durable Gracie.

Cub Swanson defeated Kron Gracie via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27) at UFC Tampa on Saturday, Oct.12, 2019, live from the AMALIE Arena in Tampa, FL.

In what was a grueling stand-up war, Swanson punished Gracie with strikes for 15 minutes. To Gracie’s credit, he applied constant pressure for the entire fight and never waivered in his attack.

“I’m tired,” said Swanson following the three-round battle. “It takes two to put on a great fight and my hat’s off to him, he stood and bang with me the whole time.”

Here’s how the entire fight played out.

Round 1

With Gracie moving forward, Swanson landed a pair of right hands on the southpaw Gracie. Gracie continued to press forward and landed a jab, but Swanson landed strikes almost at will from his back foot. Midway through the round, Swanson landed a big body kick and continued to evade the pressuring Gracie. Gracie pressed forward behind a high guard, but Swanson landed a huge right hook to the body. The round ended on the feet with Swanson landing more strikes on the advancing Gracie.

FanSided scored the round 10-9 Swanson.

Round 2

Swanson continued to land nearly at will on Gracie, avoiding Gracie’s pressure with solid lateral movement. Gracie momentarily trapped Swanson against the cage, but Swanson escaped. Moments later, Gracie attempted to pull Swanson into his guard, but Swanson backed away. Midway through the round Gracie again attempted to jump guard, but Swanson again escaped. Gracie became more aggressive with his pressure, finding his way to the clinch at times, but Swanson continued to backpedal and pepper Gracie with strikes. Zombie-like, Gracie waded through Swanson’s strikes and opened a cut over Swanson’s right eye.

FanSided scored the round 10-9 Swanson.

Round 3

Gracie opened the third round apparently unfazed by Swanson’s strikes, and the pair exchanged punches in close. From the clinch, Gracie jumps guard but Swanson wisely backed away. With three minutes remaining, Gracie attempted a judo throw that Swanson narrowly defended. Fatigued by Gracie’s constant pressure, Swanson continued to land heavy punches to Gracie’s body. With under a minute left in the fight, Gracie finally pulled Swanson into his closed guard, but Swanson was able to quickly work back to his feet. The fight ended on the feet, with both men exhausted and beaten from an incredibly high-paced fight.

FanSided scored the round 10-9 Swanson, and 30-27 for Swanson overall.

One of the most highly-regarded prospects in the sport, Gracie came into this fight with an unblemished 5-0 record with five submission victories. He last fought in February, making a successful UFC debut with a win over Alex Caceres.

Swanson is a long-time featherweight veteran. This was his 37th professional fight, and he came into the bout on a four-fight skid.
