Joanna Jedrzejczyk will not make the strawweight weight limit of 116 pounds for her upcoming UFC Tampa main event against Michelle Waterson.
The UFC Tampa main event featuring former strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk vs. Michelle Waterson is in jeopardy. According to Combate.com Jedrzejczyk is having trouble reaching the strawweight limit of 116 pounds and the UFC is currently looking at replacement opponents for Waterson.
According to the Brazilian news site, Jedrzejczyk has informed the UFC of her inability to make the limit. Waterson has been offered to fight her at a catchweight of 120 pounds but has declined the offer. Waterson was also offered replacements of either Mackenzie Dern or Amanda Ribas who are also scheduled to fight at strawweight on the undercard. Again, both were declined by Waterson.
With Waterson unable to come to a new deal for her fight the UFC is now seeking a replacement to fight Jedrzejczyk at the catchweight per Combate. One name that has been offered was Angela Hill, however, no word on the status of that potential bout.
Jedrzejczyk has been away from the sport for 10 months. Her last bout with the organization was a title fight against Valentina Shevchenko at flyweight. The inability to make weight could be a precursor to her eventual move to flyweight permanently, although following her loss to Shevchenko, Jedrzejczyk was adamant that regaining her strawweight belt was her top priority.
Waterson was coming into this fight riding a three-fight win streak. Her last win over Karolina Kowalkiewicz put her near a title shot and the potential win over the former longtime champion would have been a huge step in the right direction.
