Canelo Alvarez lands huge knockdown, cruises to decision win over Jaime Munguia

Canelo Alvarez returned to the ring on Saturday night, hoping to extend his undisputed super middleweight title reign.

To continue his championship run, the 33-year-old was tasked with getting past the undefeated knockout artist Jaime Munguía. Despite having to deal with the heavy hands of his fellow countryman, Canelo navigated his way through the storm and walked away victorious.

As we've become accustomed to, Canelo Alvarez put on a masterclass display inside the squared circle and extended his incredible record to 61-2-2. This decision win was the 22nd of his career, as he made a successful defense of his undisputed super middleweight title.

Jaime Munguia wasn't afraid to sit in the pocket and trade blows with the champion. The challengers volume was impressive and his performance proved he could hang with the very best in the world, though his opponent showed his class on the night.

Proving he can still be considered one of the best in the sport, Canelo Alvarez cruised his way to victory. As the fourth round was coming to a close, Canelo landed a perfectly-timed uppercut which sent Munguia crashing to the canvas–which was the first time the power puncher had been knocked down in his career.

Adding to memorable wins over John Ryder, Jermell Charlo, and the incredibly tough Gennady Golovkin, Canelo Alvarez extended his winning run to four straight. Though his win is still fresh, the champion has a number of options ready for him upon his return to the ring.

During the celebrations, Canelo spent time to heap praise on Munguia for the grit he showed for the entirety of the pair's 12-round affair.

"He's a great guy, a great champion," Canelo said during his post-fight interview. "He's going to continue doing good."

"I feel very proud for this kind of fight in Vegas. All around [the world] is watching up. The Mexicans. And I feel proud about representing Mexico. Viva Mexico."
